“Hoffmann’s tales” was a one and only opera written by a famous French composer Jacques Offenbach. A creator of “Orpheus in hell”, “Pericola” and “Parisian life”, he is rightfully considered to be among the founders of operetta. However, the only opera he has written in the end of his life, even though he didn’t finish it, became a success from the very beginning.
The first production took place in 1881 in the Parisian “Opera Comique”. Today both in Europe and the United States “Hoffmann’s tales” is a popular element in the repertoire of various operas, but in Russia this opera is a rarity. Librettist Geroge Barbier has based the plot on three of the Hoffmann’s tales, and Hoffmann himself became the main character in the play. There are three female characters, and ideally they should be performed by the same singer, though it is a serious challenge for production team. This production includes two performance option: in one case, all three characters will be played by Hibla Gerzmava, and in the other three parts will be performed by three soloists of the theatre. Following Offenbach’s own decision, all three “evil” characters will be performed by one actor.
