Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca” has secured its place in the top-ten most popular operas in the world. The storyline, taken from a French play by Victorien Sardou is very close to thriller in its incredible tension. Political plotting during the Napoleon era here are combined with an amazing love story. In Rome, an artist, sheltering a conspirator, overcomes tortures to keep the place of hiding a secret. He is to be prosecuted at the order of the evil chief of Pope’s Police. Tosca is the artist’s beloved who gives away a secret, unable to bear his screams. The conspirator commits a suicide, while Tosca obtains an order which cancels the prosecution and after that, stabs the evil police chief with a knife. When she is assured she has saved her beloved, he is being killed in front her very eyes. After that Tosca kills herself. A combination of strict operatic standards and a fast-moving tempo of the story itself would always set very special challenges in staging this opera. “Tosca”, first premiered a century ago, at different times attracted most brilliant artists, including Maria Callas and Monsterrat Caballe, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras.
