GORAN BREGOVIC
Serbian composer Goran Bregovic and his “Wedding and funerals orchestra” is real legend in the music world. This year during his special “Slavic tour” he will be giving a one and only concert in Moscow. For the past seven years Goran Bregovic was performing in Russia every year and still each of his new concerts is totally sold-out. Maestro has been celebrating his sixtieth anniversary in March, 2010, and he is going to premiere to Moscow his anniversary program "The Best of Goran Bregovic".
The musician will be performing for you his best songs created in the past 20 years, accompanied by the famous Russian male choir “Peresvet” and a big orchestra. Many of the songs included in this program have never been presented in Russia before! There are more reasons to his tour being called “Slavic tour” than just Goran’s love for Russia. The composer lives in Belgrade and though he was born in Bosnia he considers Yugoslavia to be his motherland. The name of this country has disappeared from the map of the world at the very moment when many songs, written by Goran Bregovic, have become widely popular among the people of former Yugoslavia. In his orchestra Serbians create side by side with Croats, Bulgarians and Macedonians.
Goran Bregovic became widely well-known by the audience after his music appeared in the soundtracks to the films made by Emir Kusturiza, who is the musician’s old friend. But even before he has met Kusturiza, Bregovic has been extremely popular in Yugoslavia, at the Balkan countries and even in the United States as the founder of the "Bijelo Dugme" (“White Button”) band. In the middle of the 70-s he has met the beginning director Kusturiza, who has also been playing in the punk-rock-band. Their acquaintance has not only given a start to the real friendship, but gave a possibility to create some of the masterpieces of international cinematograph as we know them: “Time of the Gypsies” (1988), “Arizona dream” (1993), “Black cat, white cat” (1998). In 1995 in Cannes Goran Bregovic was awarded with the Golden for the best music to the film “Underground”.
But Kusturiza is not the only film director who works with Goran Bregovic. In 1994 in Cannes Bregovic has been awarded with the Golden Palm for the soundtrack to the “Queen Margo” filmed by Patrice Chereau. The list of films where his music can be heard in total includes around forty movies. Among them: “A Chef in love” (1996), “27 missing kisses”(2000), Russian "Turkish Gambit" (2005), “Borat” (2006), Bulgarian "Letete s Rossinant" (2007), "Mustafa" (2008) and others.
There is no doubt that Bregovic today is one of the most outstanding composers, who keeps carefully old traditions of Balkan folklore music at the same time enriching it with new sounding.
“Wedding and funeral orchestra” never fails to impress with its vivid and temperamental brightness. Its rare beauty is made of the deep sounds of the wind band; female choir dresses in the gypsy wedding dresses; charming young soloist in black with the fantastic voice, who is not just singing, but playing at the same time the percussion and the piano accordion. Maestro Bregovic, all dressed in white, is always sitting next to the soloist with his guitar and conducts the orchestra in his own inimitable way shouting something out and waving his hands. You well never be able to sit down for longer than 10 minutes!
Everything created by Goran Bregovic is filled with hearty humor and unexpected contrasts. A serious acknowledged composer, considered by may as nothing less than a genius, has come to Moscow to participate in the TV-comedy show “ProjectorParisHilton”, New Year Eve TV-program and is going to cooperate with Russian artists and is recording a songs for Milan Stankovic, a participant of the “Eurovision-2010” final contest, which will take place this year in Oslo.
